01Programme pillar
Security & Strategic Affairs
Regional and maritime security: what threatens the corridor, who is militarily present in it, and what states can do about both.
Security & Strategic Affairs in detail
01The question
What this pillar asks
Bab el-Mandeb is narrow enough that a single incident can change the cost of moving goods between Europe and Asia. This pillar tracks who is armed and present in the corridor, how threats to shipping actually develop, and what the states along the coast can realistically do about them. The work runs from vessel-level incidents up to the strategic competition that brings foreign militaries into the region in the first place.
Focus areas
- Maritime security, piracy and chokepoint control (Bab el-Mandeb, Red Sea straits)
- Terrorism and violent extremism in the Horn of Africa and surrounding regions
- Military presence and strategic competition, regional and global
- Border security, conflict zones and migration dynamics
Outputs
- Risk assessments and threat briefings
- Policy briefs for governments and security agencies
- Early-warning alerts for maritime and regional threats
